Facebook rolled out a new app targeting kids under thirteen Monday. The iPhone only available app is called Messenger Kids. Users can talk or text with family and close friends allowing parents to control the app through their Facebook account.FOX10 talked to Mobile parents. “Her age group is not really interested in Facebook anymore,” said Melanie Robinson, a mother of a 12 year old daughter. Robinson said she might give Messenger Kids a try.She said, “For a child who is just now starting out in social media to have certain restrictions and parental guidance, that is important.” Facebook wants to add pre teens to its already 2 billion users. Parents manager their child’s account through their own Facebook page.A parent, Trey Taylor said, “I support the parent’s decision. I think if parents monitor something and they think it’s okay for their kid, then it’s okay for the parent.”Kids can use the app to chat with friends, make calls, using kid friendly images and filters. On Messenger Kids website, Facebook said the app is compliant with child privacy laws like Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).On COPPA’s website, it says. “A website operator must include in a privacy policy, when and how to seek verifiable consent from a parent and what responsibilities an operator has to protect children’s privacy and safety online.”Some parents told FOX10 they still won’t let their kids use the app. Bethany Zitzmann said, “I appreciate the concept, but I don’t see a need for children’s between the ages of 6 and 12 to be on social media in general.”Another parent, Whitley Hennis added, “You know a 40 year old man can sign up for the app and pretend to be a 6 year old boy, you never know with things like that.”Facebook says it will collect limited data about Messenger Kids’ users and will not allow them to make a purchase.Android and Kinder’s versions are coming later according to Facebook. The rules for traditional Facebook services aren’t changing, kids still have to be 13 years old to get their own accounts.
