Amarillo, TX Child Protective Services has reported over 14,000 families with substance abuse issues in the State of Texas. According to CPS reports in 2013, 925 families had children removed, at least temporarily, because of substance abuse issues in the panhandle.”Those meth lab bust that you hear about, if there’s kids in that home, chances are those kids are going into a foster home environment from that,” says Sharayh Carpenter, Director of Social Services, The Bair Foundation.”Often times they only leave with the clothes on their back due to safety reasons or perhaps if there was manufacturing of drugs in their home, their clothing and their belongings may be contaminated,” says LeAnn Moses, Adpotion Specialist, CPS.Many drug homes are unsafe, places where children are neglected with no running water or electricity. “There may be an over crowded situation or substance abuse leads to poor supervision by their parents,” says Moses.More foster children mean there is also a need for more foster parents. And if there are not enough in the area, the children are sent elsewhere. “They may have gone down south, so they are not even here in their home turf. So we need foster parents here. So we can keep our kids here,” says Christine Bollinger, Intake Coordinator, The Bair Foundation. In some cases children are able to stay with a relative or in foster care until they are able to reunite with their family. Then there are those children who never return and stay in the foster system hoping to eventually be adopted. “A lot of them are sad, they have lost their family and everything the know has been taken away from them overnight. And that’s through no fault of their own. I don’t know. It’s hard on kids,” says Moses. But then you have people like Tim Thiessen who along his wife sees it as his life mission to help as many children as possible. As a matter of fact the Thiessen’s have fostered for 9 1/2 half years and have helped some 30 children.”Foster kids have been exposed to the dark side of the world in a lot of ways most people don’t even think about. They’ve seen things and been exposed to things from drugs or sexual activity that has changed them. It’s our job as foster parents to really reach out to them and to try to get them to that feeling that they belong, they matter and they care. Our role is love them unconditionally,” says Thiessen.West Texas A University (WTAMU) recently introduced a new plan to encourage more students to live on campus.FIRST ALERT DAY: Red Flag Warnings for ThursdayFIRST ALERT DAY: Red Flag Warnings for ThursdayUpdated: Wednesday, March 14 2018 7:35 PM EDT2018 03 14 23:35:25 GMTSource: KFDAThe March wind is back and will get stronger by Thursday. The March wind is back and will get stronger by Thursday.Pet owners: Experts say tick season has arrived earlyPet owners: Experts say tick season has arrived earlyUpdated: Wednesday, March 14 2018 7:01 PM EDT2018 03 14 23:01:07 GMTSOURCE: KFDADue to the dry, spring like weather we’re experiencing, ticks have arrived early this year.Due to the dry, spring like weather we’re experiencing, ticks have arrived early this year.Fuels Fire Behavior Advisory issued for multiple states due to extreme fire riskFuels Fire Behavior Advisory issued for multiple states due to extreme fire riskUpdated: Wednesday, March 14 2018 6:43 PM EDT2018 03 14 22:43:10 GMTAn advisory to residents of abnormal fire behavior; Source: OK Forestry ServiceAn advisory to residents of abnormal fire behavior; Source: OK Forestry ServiceWith a windy and warm forecast, A Fuel Fire Behavior Advisory has been issued for parts of West Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. With a windy and warm forecast, A Fuel Fire Behavior Advisory has been issued for parts of West Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
