BRENTWOOD, TN (WSMV) One man death has many more thinking about the direction of their lives. Gary Armstrong shined shoes for years at a local YMCA, and anyone who has ever met him knows just how much he will be missed. But the way he lived his life might just hold a key for all of us.Surrounded by action, Armstrong corner of the YMCA in Maryland Farms offered a chance to slow down.”I tell you what. This is where he really felt welcome. He felt special being here,” YMCA member Gary Benz said. For about a decade, usually six days a week, Armstrong shined shoes at the YMCA.”I think if you asked Gary what he did for a living, he would say, put smiles on faces. I don shine shoes. And that was something he was really proud of,” said Bob Knestrick, Group Vice President for the Maryland Farms YMCA.Seven dollars got you wisdom, music and candy for the kids.”It just seemed to me that he was at peace to shine shoes,” YMCA member Jim Aylward said. Now, the music plays, and the shoe shine stand sits ready. But Armstrong is gone. Shoe Shine Guy died this weekend. The cause is still unclear, but the void is not.”Just a simple guy. But he impacted so many people lives,” Benz said.”To see someone take that much pride and passion and literally ask you, you sure they look alright? You sure they look alright? I can hit them again if you need that. And it just something you don find that often, unfortunately, in society today,” Aylward said. And it turns out Armstrong once had a lot in common with his customers.”He had a high pressure sales job. He was pretty successful. And he had a heart condition. He decided that he needed to do something that less stress. And he thought about what he loved to do,

” Knestrick said. For Armstrong, that wasn sales. It was serving and a deeper sense of significance.”And I think, really, when it comes down to all the people, we all live out here in Williamson County, and it fast paced, and all. When it really comes down to it, I think we really like to live that simple life,” Benz said.A memorial service in Armstrong honor is in the works right now. So, too, is a memorial scholarship that could be named the Shoe award.Second Chances puppy program changing lives, saving othersSecond Chances puppy program changing lives, saving othersUpdated: Wednesday, March 14 2018 11:31 PM EDT2018 03 15 03:31:42 GMTCourtesy: Davidson Co.
